Mrs. Sen's
What I saw as a symbol right away was that Mrs. Linden had whiskey in her coffee. Sometimes you dont really see what is behind the thermous with some people. You can see the shiny exterior and the perfect smooth surface but you can never actually tell whats on the inside until you take the cap off and see. Mrs. Linden could have a lot that has made her drink, she could have problems with family or the drinking could be the solution to her problems, maybe she uses the alcohol as a crutch to make it through the problems she has.

Interpreter of Maladies
1.The peice of paper with the address on it that Mrs. Das hands to Mr. Kapasi flies away, it seems as if fate wanted them not to be together or else he would have been able to keep the address.

Mr. Pirzada comes to dine
1.Mr. Pirzada was from a city in the former country of Pakistan called Daca. He was not familiar with the culture in America, and it seems that the main reason he joined the family for dinner was for company. His huge family and everything he knew was left far away across seas when he came to America to study the foliage of New England. The kind family invited him for dinner because he seemed to share a similar culture and beliefs as they did.
2. The narrator associates his coat with Mr. Pirzada because each time he came to eat with the family he would always have a coat on. It was the little girl’s duty to hang the coat up.
3. The event of India and Pakistan drawing closer to war and eventually going to war changed the tone of Mr. Pirzada’s dining. The following sentence explains how the tone changed. “What I remember during those twelve days of the war was that my father no longer asked me to watch the news with them, and that Mr. Pirzada stopped bringing me candy, and that my mother refused to serve anything other than boiled egg and rice for dinner.”
4. Halloween serves as a turning point in the story.
5. The division of the country of India into Pakistan and India in 1947 is an example of division. Also, the division of Mr. Pirzada’s family for a year while he was in America is also an example of division. He valued his family very much and this division was a big loss for him. “Each week Mr. Pirzada wrote letters to his wife, and sent comic books to each of his seven daughters, but the postal system, along with most everything else in Dacca, had collapsed, and he had not heard word of them in over six months.”
6. One example of loss was the loss of Mr. Pirzada’s presence at dinner time in the family. Also, the loss of communication between Mr. Pirzada and his family back home showed the loss of something he was very passionate about.

A Temporary Matter
1.Shoba lets shukumar know that he has a dentist appointment next friday in the story, shukumar then runs his finger across his teeth showing his reaction to what shoba had said about his upcoming trip to the dentist.
2.Shoba's secrets: Shoba said that once while Shukumar's mother was in town, she went to a bar to have a drink with a friend instead of working late like she said. She also confessed that once, while her and Shukamar had been dating for about 2 weeks she peaked into his address book to see if he had written her in.Shukumar's secrets: He confessed to hating the sweater Shoba bought him for their anniversary one year, and he got drunk at a bar in the middle of the day because of it. Shukamar also admitted to knowing the sex of their baby, and hid it from Shoba.
3. The soil in the potted ivy, as the narrator explained, was so dry that it had to be watered for the candles to stick in the dirt. Just as the relationship between the Shukamar and Shoba, it needs change before it will actually begin to work. The water symbolizes the change that needs to take place so that the soil will form to allow the candles to stick.

The Village
I think that the elders deciding to create the village was a mistake because instead of avoiding the histerics of death and tragidy they basically created it themselves. Most people cant grow and learn unless theres some sort of failure or fear..without either of these things people become too sheltered and when they have to face the real world they end up hurt and scared.
For example when lucias wanted to go into the forrest to the towns and the elders wouldnt allow him he started to wonder and almost found his mothers suit that represented the "creatures."
Also when Noah came to lucias and stabbed him due to the jealousy he had with lucias and ivy created even more controversy and led to Mr. Walker coming clean to Ivy the scheme that they had created to keep people safe and in the village.
